FREDONIA, N.Y. --The Blue Devils opened up their home campaign with an impressive 3-0 shutout of the visiting Alfred Saxons at Dods Hall.
The Devils (4-1) came into the game after a strong second place finish this past weekend at the Red Dragon Classic in Cortland. Alfred falls to 1-3 on the season.
In the first match, the Devils took an early 23-14 lead only to see the Saxons figtht back. Alfred scored nine unanswered points to make it 23-23. Fredonia State would eventually prevail, 25-23.
The Devils would keep the momentum going into the next two games. In Game Two, the Saxons could not keep pace as the Devils held off another small comeback to win the game 25-17. In Game Three, the Blue Devils took control early, finishing off the visitors with a 25-11 win.
Leading the way for Fredonia State was Chelsea Senn (Hamburg/Frontier) with nine kills and Kaitlin Erdmann (Randolph) with seven kills. Fresh off being named SUNYAC Women's Volleyball Player of the Week, Brittany Lis (Lancaster) finished with 28 assists, while Sarah Zureck (Lancaster/St. Mary's of Lancaster) totaled seven digs and 10 aces.
The Devils are in action this coming weekend as they travel to the Nazareth Tournament. Their first game is Friday against Juniata College at 2 p.m. They face N.Y.U. at 8 p.m. On Saturday, they take on Sage University at Noon.
