CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Fredonia State advanced to the championship round of the Cortland Red Dragon Classic with a pair of season-opening wins Friday.
The Blue Devils opened the season with a 25-12, 25-12, 25-11 victory over Montclair State, then downed St. Lawrence 25-18, 25-8, 26-24, to advance to a semifinal meeting with the host Cortland Red Dragons at 10 a.m. Saturday.
The championship match is 4 p.m. Saturday.
Against Montclair, freshman Kaitlin Orcutt (Hamburg/West Seneca West) had seven kills, sophomore Lindsey Olson (Portville) six kills, junior Sarah Zurech (Lancaster/St. Mary's of Lancaster) 15 digs, and junior Brittany Lis (Lancaster) 18 assists and seven digs.
Lis connected for the match-winning kill against St. Lawrence. She also had 24 assists and 16 digs. Also, senior Jenna Tatu (Tonawanda/Kenmore West) was credited with nine kills, eight digs, and four blocks; junior Chelsea Senn (Hamburg/Frontier) added five kills and three blocks, junior Jennifer Michelsen (Lakeview/Frontier) 11 digs, and Orcutt eight kills.
