FREDONIA STATE 4, MEDIALLE 1
FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State opened its 25th season of women's soccer with a 4-1 non-conference victory Wednesday over the Medaille Mavericks.
Freshman forward Taylor Wingerden (Macedon/Palmyra-Macedon) scored two goals in her first collegiate game. Senior forward Julie LaPolla (Penfield) and junior midfielder Julia Medwid (Alexander) had one goal each for the Blue Devils.
Medaille freshman Caitlyn Donahue (Buffalo/Kenmore West) scored in the 73rd minute to ruin the Blue Devils' bid for a shutout. Kayleigh Forger (Rochester/Churchville-Chili), a freshman, made one save over 81 minutes in the Blue Devil net. Sophomore Meaghan Meszaros (Selden/Newfield) played the final eight minutes and didn't face a shot.
LaPolla opened the scoring in the 18th minute when she headed in a short crossing pass from junior midfielder Melissa Cummiskey (Clarence). The Blue Devils took command with a pair of goals in less than one minute late in the first half. Medwid made it 2-0 when she converted a short through ball from junior defender Lyz Dembrow (Lockport) at 41:59. Wingerden's first goal at 42:55 made it 3-0.
Wingerden added an insurance goal in the 66th minute when she scored into an empty net after a long through ball by freshman Maria Green (Albany/South Colonie) drew Medaille freshman goalkeeper Danay O'Connor (Rochester/West Irondequoit) out of her net and out of the play after failing to intercept the pass.
O'Connor made 10 saves in her collegiate debut. The Blue Devils outshot the Mavericks, 29-4, and had a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Fredonia State is back in action Friday at Salisbury (Md.) University.
