New Paltz edges Blue Devils

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- New Paltz scored midway through the second half and made the goal stand for a 1-0 SUNYAC road win over Fredonia State at University Stadium.

 The Hawks (2-6-1, 1-2 SUNYAC)  the scoreless tie with a determined effort in the 66th minute. After one player split two defenders in the midfield, Shelby Kondelka gathered in a short through-ball just inside the 18-yard box. Kondelka turned around her defender and stuck a rising shot into the upper right corner of the net.

The Blue Devils (4-5, 0-3 SUNYAC) nearly tied the game in the 74th minute when Julie LaPolla dribbled into the box and clanged a shot off the right post. In the 85th minute, New Paltz goalkeeper Stephanie Vega batted down and caught a shot by Taylor Wingerden ticketed for the upper left corner.

With 90 seconds remaining, LaPolla fought off a defender and chipped a left-footed attempt which was stopped. It the last save of the game by Vega, who had nine overall. Fredonia State's Kayleigh Forger had two saves in the game.

The Blue Devils owned a territorial advantage for most of the first half. They had nine shots, five resulting in saves by Vega. Meanwhile, the Hawks managed just one shot. The Blue Devils also had a 2-0 advantage in corner kicks during the first half.

Fredonia State had a 21-7 advantage in shots overall.

The Blue Devils take a break from SUNYAC competition until Oct. 8. In the meantime, they have two non-conference games, including a date with Union College at 1 p.m. next Saturday. A ceremony commemorating 25 Years of Women's Soccer at Fredonia State will be held at halftime.
