FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Freshman forward #Taylor Wingerden (Macedon/Palmyra-Macedon)# scored on a direct kick in the 57th minute as Fredonia State defeated St. John Fisher, 1-0, Tuesday night at University Stadium.
Set up in the left wing just outside the 18-yard box, Wingerden hooked a left-footed shot over the defensive wall and over the head of St. John Fisher goalkeeper Jessica Plukas (Rochester/Irondequoit) at 56:47.
It was Wingerden's team-leading fourth goal of the season.
Sophomore goalkeeper #Meaghan Meszaros (Selden/Newfield)# made six saves to notch her first shutout of the season. She improved to 2-0 this season while the Blue Devils improved to 4-3 this season. It was their eighth straight win over the Cardinals (1-5-1).
Plukas made seven saves for the Cardinals.
Fredonia State had a 19-9 advantage in shots and a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.
The Blue Devils are back in action Friday against Oneonta. Game time is 4 p.m. at University Stadium.
