FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Ryan O'Donnell (Orchard Park) had two goals and three assists as Fredonia State topped Buffalo State, 6-3, Saturday night at University Stadium.
Eli Lubberts (Ontario/Wayne) added two goals and Luke Tylutki (Pittsford/Pittsford-Mendon) had a goal and an assist for the Blue Devils (2-5, 1-0 SUNYAC), winners of two straight. It was the SUNYAC opener for both teams.
The Blue Devils roared to a 4-0 lead on two goals by O'Donnell (his third and fourth of the year), one by Lubberts, and one by John Grabowski (Middleport/Roy-Hart), the final one at 55:40. It was Grabowski's second goal of the sason and would stand as the game-winner.
The Bengals (2-5, 0-1 SUNYAC) began a comeback on a penalty kick by Thomas Karanas (Tonawanda) at 58:37. Then, at 61:52, Wilfred Valerio (Bronx/Bronx Academy of Letters) cleaned up a deflected ball in the box following a Buffalo State corner kick and a teammate's deflected shot. Valerio's goal cut the Fredonia State lead to 4-2.
Momentum swung back toward the Blue Devils when O'Donnell made a play on a short goal kick and passed ahead to Lubberts, who eluded a defender and scored his second goal of the game and fourth of the season, at 64:41.
Buffalo State's Shaun Winter (Grand Island) received a teammate's cross and scored with a hard shot from outside the 18-yard box, at 69:43. Tylutki, a freshman, scored his first collegiate goal at 77:27 on a header off a direct kick by Cory Paine (Ontario/Wayne).
The Blue Devils had a 23-13 advantage in shots, while the Bengals were up 9-1 on corner kicks.
Fredonia State returns to action with a SUNYAC road trip next weekend -- 4 p.m. Friday at Oneonta, 1 p.m. Saturday at New Paltz.
