ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Fredonia State played a strong second half Tuesday and it led to a 2-1 comeback road victory over Nazareth.
Goals by Jake Persons (East Greenbush/Columbia) and Eli Lubberts (Ontario/Wayne) in the 77th and 84th minutes, respectively, accounted for the scoring by the Blue Devils (1-5).
Outshot 10-4 in the first half, the Blue Devils had many chances in the second half and eventually outshot their hosts, 17-13, including two shots off posts.
Nazareth's Andrew Alaimo scored in the first half, at 29:26, after a foul on the Blue Devils gave Nazareth the ball. The Golden Flyers (1-3-1) carried the 1-0 lead into halftime.
Persons scored in the 77th minute, his second of the season, unassisted, to even the score at 1-1. The Blue Devils spent the next seven minutes on the attack. Luke Tylucki (Pittsford/Pittsford-Mendon) hit a post at 77:21 and later had a shot blocked by a defender, as did Ryan O'Donnell (Orchard Park). A corner kick by O'Donnell led to the goal by Lubberts, also his second this fall.
Each goalkeeper was credited with three saves, with Bobby McGinnis (Elmira/Elmira Free) in net for the Blue Devils vs. Naz's Kyle Connolly. Simon Mounsdon and John Kerr had assists on the lone Nazareth goal.
After six straight non-conference games, it's on to the SUNYAC portion of the season for the Blue Devils -- a 7 p.m. Saturday home game vs. Buffalo State. It's the first of 10 conference games on the 2010 schedule.
