FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State improved to 3-2 this season with a 4-1 victory Saturday over Penn State Behrend in the nightcap of the Clarion Hotel Soccer Classic at University Stadium.
The Blue Devils took a 2-0 lead on first-half goals by Catie Hale (Lockport/Starpoint) and Lindsay Putman (Ontario/Wayne). Hale scored on a direct kick at 38:26 and then set up Putman at 44:27. Julia LaPolla (Penfield) upped the lead to 3-0 with an unassisted goal at 68:50 before the visiting Lions broke through.
A goal by Lindsey Steinsdoefer (Pittsburgh, Pa.) from Kourtney Gasparovic (West Mifflin, Pa.) ruined the shutout bid by Fredonia State goalkeeper Meaghan Meszaros (Selden/Newfield) at 85:54. The Blue Devils got the goal back, however, as Cecilia Roche (Spencer/Spencer Vanetten) completed the scoring at 86:16.
The Blue Devils had 19-12 advantage in shots while Meszaros was credited with four saves. LaPolla and Lyz Dembrow (Lockport) represented the Blue Devils on the all-tournament team. Kelly Thill (Wexford, Pa.) and Caitlyn Elser (Cranberry, Pa.) were chosen from Penn State Behrend, which dropped to 2-3.
University of Rochester (6-1) won the Classic with a 6-3 victory over Baldwin-Wallace (3-3) earlier in the day. Rochester's Ellen Coleman (Wauwatosa, Wis.) was chosen tournament most valuable player; she had five goals in two games. Joining her on the all-tournament team were teammates Bridgette Varin (Scottsville), Meaghan Magee (Rochester), and Kirsten Ross (Northnumberland, Pa.). Baldwin-Wallace's all-tourney choices were Lindsey Cooper (Westerville, Ohio) and Bucky Gammiere (Mentor, Ohio).
