Devils spilt with ranked opponents

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- On Day 1 of the Nazareth Tournament, the Fredonia State women's volleyball split with a pair of nationally-ranked teams. They fell to No. 2 Juniata, 3-0, in the opener. In the nightcap, the Devils defeated No. 19 NYU, 3-1.

Juniata won its sets 25-17, 25-15 and 25-15.

Kaitlin Erdmann (Randolph) and Kaitlin Orcutt (Hamburg/West Seneca West) had five kills each to lead the Devils' offense. Danielle McNiel (West Seneca/St. Mary's) had three aces, while Britanny Lis (Lancaster) had 19 assists.

Defensively, Jenna Tatu (Tonawanda/Kenmore West), Sarah Zureck (Lancaster/St. Mary's of Lancaster) and Jennifer Michelsen (Lakeview/Frontier) had eight digs apice.

The Devils defeated NYU 15-25, 25-23, 25-21 and 25-19. It was the first loss of the season for NYU (6-1).

Chelsea Senn (Hamburg/Frontier) led the Devils with 12 kills. Orcutt and Tatu had 11 apiece. Lis was credited with 42 assists and 13 digs. Zureck had 16 digs.

The Devils play Saturday at Noon vs. Sage College. Their second match is determined by their seeding after three matches. In addition to the hosts, Nazareth, Hiram, Heidelberg and New Paltz round out the eight-team field.
