FREDONIA, N.Y.-- The Fredonia State Blue Devils women's basketball team put up a strong fight in the first half, but could not contain the Cortland Red Dragons after intermission, falling to their unbeaten SUNYAC foe 84-63 at Steele Hall.
The Blue Devils are now 2-5 overall and 0-2 in the SUNYAC. The Red Dragons' record remains unblemished at 6-0, 2-0 in the conference.
The Blue Devils used a strong presence in the paint throughout the first half.
Jaimie Warren scored eight points, four of which came from the free throw line. The Devils as a whole shot 91.7 percent (11-12) from the charity stripe in the half.
Neither team led by more than three points through the first nine minutes of action. At the 10:10 mark of the first half, the Red Dragons led 18-13.
Enter
Grace Moore. Over the span of 1:07, Moore would connect on two three-pointers and a layup to ignite a Blue Devil rally. With the addition of a
Caroline Hourihan three pointer, the Devils went on an 11-2 run.
Cortland clawed their way back, exchanging leads with the Devils five times until eventually pulling away towards the end of the half, leading at the break 42-34.
The Red Dragons expanded their lead entering the second half. The visitors jumped out to a 20 point lead ten minutes into the half from a multitude of scorers. Micki Volpini led the way with 16 points, followed by Brittany Cohen's 13 points.
Moore and Warren both finished the game with 13 points to lead the team. The 13 points for Warren are a career high.
Fredonia State is back in action December 9th at Allegheny at 6 p.m. The Devils then begin their 29 day hiatus, returning January 7th at Oneonta State,
