BOX SCORE
FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Buffalo State ruined Fredonia State's home opener with a 2-1 overtime win in SUNYAC action Friday.
With players from both teams scrambling for a loose puck, the Bengals' Shane Avery (Fort Covington, N.Y.) slid through the crease and delivered the game-winning goal with 23 seconds left in the overtime. It was Avery's first collegiate goal.
Nicholas Petriello (St. Catherines, Ont.) was credited with the lone assist.
It was Buffalo State's first win in Fredonia since 2006. The Bengals improved to 1-2 both overall and in the SUNYAC, while the Blue Devils slipped to 1-4 overall and 1-2 in the conference.
Buffalo State drew first blood against their Western New York rivals with a power-play goal by Justin Knee (Centralia, Ont.) at 18:58 of the first period. It was Knee's first goal of the season.
Stationed near one circle, Knee took a cross-ice pass from the opposite circle from Zach Hale (Sandy, Utah) and one-timed his shot into the net into the open side. James Durham (Marilla, N.Y.) got the second assist on Knee's goal.
Fredonia State drew even at 17:38 of the second period as
Jordan Oye (Richmond, B.C.) netted his second goal of the season, from
Bryan Ross (Livonia, Mich.), following a scrum in front of the net.
It was the only shot to get past Buffalo State goaltender Kevin Carr (Unionville, Ont.). A freshman, Carr made 39 saves to earn his first collegiate win.
Fredonia State also started a freshman in goal.
Mark Friesen (Calgary, Alberta) finished with 36 saves.
The Blue Devils stay at home for two SUNYAC games next weekend. Geneseo visits Friday at 7 p.m., and Brockport is in town next Saturday.
