MEADVILLE, Pa. -- A 153-143 victory over Allegheny was the first time Fredonia State has defeated the Gators in the coaching tenure of head coach
Arthur Wang.
The victory was led by quadruple winner
Stephanie Andrasek (Parma, Ohio/Normandy). A sophomore, Andrasek had season-best times in winning the 100-yard and 200-yard breast strokes (1:11.03 and 2:36.55, respectively).
She was also victorious in the 200 individual medley (2:19.27) was swam the second leg of the winning 200 medley relay to start the dual meet.
Wang felt his team's victory in that relay and the meet-ending 400 freestyle relay were the key moments of the meet. Joining Andrasek in the first race were sophomore
Emily Ginty (Chenango Forks), sophomore
Elizabeth Schake (Churchville/Churchville-Chili), and freshman
Jennifer Benson (Canandaigua).
In the concluding 400 free relay, won by the Blue Devils in 3:43,15, Schake swam the opening leg and Benson the anchor. In between were freshman Jennifer Smith (Wind Gap, Pa./Easton Area) and senior
Morgan Reisch (Fairport). The win clinched the victory for the Blue Devils and enabled Schake to become a triple-winner on the day. In addition to the two relays, she touched first during the 100 butterly (1:02.32).
As usual, the Blue Devils were strong in the diving, led by double-winner
Sarah Ficarro (Owego). A sophomore, Ficarro posted an NCAA qualifying score of 263.85 in the 1-meter springboard competition. She won the 3-meter competition with 256.30 points.
Wang was happy with the outcome, coming as it did against a strong competition, and was quick to point out that it took a total team effort. "With the exception of Geneseo," he said, "it was our first competitive meet in four weeks, and the women needed to step up to the challenge. ... The women team is general is just a bunch of fighters. They don't back down from anyone."
The women improved to 4-2 in dual meets. They are idle next weekend over Thanksgiving break before returning to host the Blue Devil Invitational over three days -- Dec. 3 through Dec. 5.
The Fredonia State men were defeated by Allegheny, 164-136.
