ERIE, Pa. -- Fredonia State was unable to recover from a poor shooting first half Saturday in a 68-52 loss to host Penn State Behrend in the first round of Behrend's tournament.
The Blue Devils shot 21.2 percent in the first half (7 of 33), and trailed 31-21 at the break. They were 12 of 27 from the field in the second half (44.4 percent), but could not overcome their slow start.
Kristina Kuscht (Webster/Webster-Schroeder) was perfect from the field -- 6 of 6 -- and added 3 of 5 from the foul line to finish with a team-high 15 points in just 11 minutes off the bench.
Grace Moore (Fredonia) added 11 points and a team-high nine rebounds,
Liz Wierbinski (Camillus/West Genesee) blocked five shots, and
Caroline Hourihan (Buffalo/Nardin) had a team-high four assists.
Behrend had three players in double figures, led by Holly Bouquin with 15 points. Emily Detsch had 13 points and nine rebounds, while Abby Henderson added 10 points.
Fredonia State dropped to 1-1 with the loss, and returns to action at 1 p.m. Sunday in the tournament consolation game against either Otterbein or Westminster.
