FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Union improved to 8-2 with a 3-1 victory over Fredonia State and put a damper on the Blue Devils' commemeration of a quarter century of women's soccer.
Jennifer Mansfield scored the first two goals by the Stateswomen, in the 13th and 24th minutes, respectively, and her team never fell out of the lead even though the Blue Devils had a quick response.
The Blue Devils (4-6) cut their deficit to 2-1 in the 25th minute on a goal by #Taylor Wingerden,# her team-leading sixth of the season. Wingerden's shot deflected off the fingers of Union goalkeeper Abby Stohler, who finished the game with seven saves.
The Stateswomen added an insurance goal by Michaela Katz in the 38th minute.
Playing in the second half only, Blue Devil goalkeeper Meaghan Meszaros was credited with four saves. The Blue Devils were outshot 14-13, while Union had a 9-4 advantage in corner kicks.
During halftime, former players were introduced on the field to commemorate 25 Years of Women's Soccer at Fredonia State. The ceremony was held in conjunction with Homecoming 2010.
Fredonia State returns to action Tuesday at Elmira College. Game time is 4 p.m.
