Recruiting

Recruiting guidelines are outlined in Bylaw 13 of the NCAA Manual.

Prospective Student-Athletes

Bylaw 13.02.7 Prospective Student-Athlete.  A prospective student-athlete is a student who has started classes for the ninth grade.  In addition, a student who has not started classes for the ninth grade becomes a prospective student-athlete if the institution provides such an individual (or the individual's relatives or friends) any financial assistance or other benefits that the institution does not provide to prospective students generally.

An individual remains a prospective student-athlete until one of the following occurs (whichever occurs earlier):
  1. The individual officially registers and enrolls in a minimum full-time program of studies and attends classes in any term of a four-year collegiate institution's regular academic year (excluding summer); or
  2. The individual participates in a regular squad practice or competition at a four-year collegiate institution.

Recruiting

Bylaw 13.02.8 Recruiting.  Recruiting is any solicitation of a prospective student-athlete or a prospective student-athlete’s relative [or guardian(s)] by an institutional staff member or by a representative of the institution's athletics interests for the purpose of securing the prospective student-athlete's enrollment and ultimate participation in the institution's intercollegiate athletics program.

Bylaw 13.02.8.1 Recruited Prospective Student-Athlete.  Actions by staff members or athletics representatives that cause a prospective student-athlete to become a recruited prospective student-athlete at that institution are:
  1. Providing the prospective student-athlete with an official visit;
  2. Having an arranged, in-person, off-campus encounter with the prospective student-athlete or the prospective student-athlete's relatives, guardian(s) or individual of a comparable relationship; or
  3. Initiating or arranging a telephone contact with the prospective student-athlete, the prospective student-athlete's relatives, guardian(s) or individual of a comparable relationship on more than one occasion for the purpose of recruitment.

Visiting Campus

Fredonia State encourages prospective student-athletes to visit campus and take part of admissions programs, through official and unofficial visits.  Coaches, please use the appropriate forms provided in the department shared drive when planning a visit.

Official Visit
  • An official visit is when Fredonia State finances either whole or part of the visit after extending an invitation.  A prospective student-athlete is allowed only ONE official visit per institution that cannot exceed 48 hours or be before January 1 of the junior year in high school.
  • Official visits are initiated by the coaching staff.

Unofficial Visit
  • An unofficial visit is when the prospective student-athlete visits the institution at their own expense.  There is not a limitation on the number of unofficial visits a prospective student-athlete can make, and it can occur prior to January of their junior year in high school.

Financial Aid

Financial aid guidelines are outlined in Bylaw 15 of the NCAA Manual.

No NCAA Division III school can offer athletic grants or athletic scholarships.  Therefore, it is critical that each year, any student-athlete requesting consideration for financial aid based on need, complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in order to establish eligibility for assistance.  The FAFSA may be obtained at the Financial Aid Office on campus, or at a local high school.  All scholarships at Fredonia State are based on demonstrated financial need or academics, as determined by an evaluation of the FAFSA.
