Devils tie with Utica

FREDONIA, N.Y -- The Fredonia State women's soccer team traded first-half goals with Utica, then both teams converted penalty kicks in the second half as they played to a 2-2 tie on Friday afternoon.

Fredonia State struck first when Anna Ratchuk scored in the 11th minute. The Devils controlled most of the action, but a quick burst form the Pioneers resulted in the game-tying goal when Madison Wagner ripped a shot that went just past the Devil goaltender Abby Szymkowiak and right to Amber Piersma for an easy tap in.

Five minutes into the second half, Piersma connected for her second goal on a penalty kick as Utica took a 2-1 advantage.

That lead would hold up for twelve-and-a-half minutes until the Devils were fouled in the goalie box. Bronwyn Madden nailed the PK to tie the game.

Szymkowiak finished with four saves. Utica's Avery Lawton made five saves.

The Devils now stand at 0-2-1. Utica is 1-1-1.

Fredonia State will play Keuka at 12:30 on Saturday at University Stadium. Utica will face Oswego at the same time on the turf field.
