BOXSCORE FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Senior transfer
Jacob Reynolds scored the game-tying, and then the game-winning goals in a 4-3 win over visiting Geneseo on Tuesday evening men's soccer action at Fredonia State. Reynolds' first goal came on a break away where he slipped it past an aggressive Geneseo goalie that came out of the box.
Liam Booth assisted with the lead pass to tie the match at 3-3.
The game winner came on a nifty cross from
Chance LaCroix in front of the net. Reynolds beat the defender and the goalie to put the Devils up for good.
Thomas McDonald made eight saves in goal, while giving up three scores. He made several diving stops, and two of the scores were second-chances off rebounds.
The Devils got on the board quickly when
Liam Winters scored two minutes into the game. Winters hooked the ball past the goalie just inside the right post.
Sam Evans assisted.
Geneseo's Dylan Thody tied the game thirty minutes later on an unassisted score. Four-and-a-half minutes after that, Jace DiPalo put the Knights up 2-1 with help from Thody.
Evans and Winters switched roles from the Devils' first score, with Evans finding net off a pass from Winters. Winters ripped the ball from near the right corner post to Evans who headed it in for the score and a 2-2 tie.
Geneseo's Anthony Abbondanza made it a 3-2 game in the 65th minute. Aidan Lodie ripped a shot from point-blank range just in from of the net, and McDonald stuffed the shot for a save. However, the ball found its way to Abbondanza who tapped it in for the lead.
Reynolds -- who came off the bench -- would then go to work scoring his goals in the 71st and 74th minutes to secure the win and improve the Devils to 1-1-1 on the season. Evans and Winters each had a goal and an assist in the Fredonia State scoring column.
Geneseo's Max Crothall had three saves for the Knights. They drop to 1-2 on the season.
"We really were not ready for what Geneseo was coming at us with early in the game after our goal," said head coach
P.J. Gondek. "We were actually lucky to be only down one goal. We have
Thomas McDonald to thank for that. The second half we totally flipped the game and came out with much more confidence. Even after their goal we fought back again and again. Jake Reynolds had some quality finishes for sure. Signature win for us. On to the Blue Devil Classic."
The men's and women's soccer teams will play host to the Blue Devil Classic this weekend. Action starts at 1:00 on Friday afternoon.
