BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- Fredonia State baseball dropped both games of a doubleheader against Geneva College on Tuesday afternoon, with final scores of 8–5 and 7–4.
Game 1:
The Devils came out hot in the opening inning, scoring two runs right away.
Kyle Tedford led off with a single and advanced to third on a double by
Bryce Firkins. Both runners came around to score on a two-run double by
Tyler Curtis, giving the Devils a quick 2–0 lead.
In the third inning, Fredonia State added another run. Tedford doubled and later scored on a misplay by Geneva's defense following a steal and a throwing error, pushing the lead to 3–0.
Geneva responded in the bottom half with three unearned runs and two runs in the fifth. Fredonia State regained momentum in the sixth. Firkins led off with a walk, stole second, advanced on a wild pitch, and came home on a sacrifice fly by Christian Cabrera, cutting Geneva's lead to 5–4.
In the top of the seventh,
Giovanni Amodeo delivered a solo home run to center field, his first of the season, but it wasn't enough to overcome Geneva's earlier six-run output across the fifth and sixth innings.
On the mound,
Michael Byrns took the loss for Fredonia State, giving up five runs (only two earned) over five innings while striking out eight. Geneva's Caleb Graft earned the win with a five-inning performance, allowing three runs (two earned) and striking out seven. Cayden Cribbs picked up the save for Geneva as well.
Game 2:
In game two, the Devils jumped ahead in the second inning with a three-run burst. After back-to-back singles by
AJ Roach and
Riley Cardinali, a bunt single by
Nick Vitelli loaded the bases.
Noah Panek brought in the first run on a fielder's choice while
Brady Ventura followed with an RBI groundout, and
Kyle Tedford added a third run with an RBI grounder of his own.
Geneva capitalized on a pair of fielding errors and a balk in the third inning to score four runs. They tacked on three more in the fourth, again aided by throwing errors from Fredonia State. The Devils added a run in the fifth as Cardinali delivered an RBI single but the Tornado's led was to large to overcome in the end.
Hunter Johnson was charged with the loss for the Devils while Geneva's Ethan Blair picked up the win in relief, allowing just one earned run over three innings.
Fredonia State falls to 10-21 on the season and will look to bounce back when they hit the road to face Plattsburgh State on Friday, May 2nd at 3:00 p.m.
