FREDO0NIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State dropped both games in a non league doubleheader to Penn State Behrend on Wednesday, falling 5–1 in the opener and 18–2 in the second game at Ludwig Field.
Game 1
Fredonia State battled tightly through six innings, even taking a 1–0 lead in the bottom of the fourth thanks to some heads-up base running from
Cole Schraufstetter. A solo home run from Behrend's Chase Palmer evened the score back up at 1-1. Things came unraveled for the Devils in the seventh as the Lions tacked on four runs to put the game out of reach.
The top performer for Fredonia State was
Kyle Tedford, who had a hit, a walk, and reached base twice. For Behrend, Palmer's solo homer and walk proved crucial with relief pitcher Jack Baumgartel picking up the win with 1.2 innings of scoreless work. Jake Manendo earned his fifth save of the season as well.
Game 2
To start the game Penn State Behrend erupted for nine runs in the first inning and never looked back. The Behrend offense stayed hot all game, compiling 19 hits and scoring in five of the seven innings.
Fredonia State was led by
Tyler Curtis who reached base twice and scored a run, and
Andrew Tucker went 1-for-3 with a run scored while
Zachary Richards added a double as well. The Lions were led by Mac Ciocco, who went 3-for-4 with five RBIs, including a pair of doubles. Pitcher Sawyer Prince earned the win for Behrend, giving up two earned runs over 3.1 innings before turning it over to the bullpen.
Fredonia State's record now stands at 9–17. The Devils will next take on New Paltz this weekend. Game times have been adjusted due to the weather. Friday will be a 10 a.m. doubleheader, and Saturday's single game will start at Noon. The team will honor its seniors prior to the game.
