BUFFALO, N.Y. -- After a scoreless first half, Buffalo State struck twice in the second half en route to a 2-0 victory over the Fredonia State men's soccer team.
Both sides started slow on offense as they combined for just eight shots in the first half. Diego Rivera scored in the 51st minute to break open the scoring. It was his team-leading seventh of the season.
Fredonia State's best chance to score came off a penalty kick which went right to the Bengal goaltender for the save.
"That was an old fashioned SUNYAC battle tonight between rivals," said head coach
P.J. Gondek. "It came down to Buffalo State finishing their chances and Fredonia didn't. Missing the penalty kick was tough when we could have tied the game. The pressure is on against Potsdam Saturday."
Buffalo State's Joseph Desmonie scored in the 86th minute to provide the winning margin.
Max Shoemaker earned the shutout making three saves. Overall, Buffalo State out shot Fredonia 17-8, and they pick up two points in the Battle by the Lake. They improve to 5-2-2 and 1-2 in the SUNYAC.
