FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State men's soccer team came up just short against Plattsburgh on Saturday afternoon. The Devils fell to the Cardinals by a final score of 2-0. "This is a tough result for us to swallow", said head coach PJ Gondek. "We had a solid first half and had the lead".
This was a tightly contested and physical contest between both sides throughout the game. To start, Fredonia State would capture the games first lead with Kaleb Stuart finding the back of the net off of a pass from Chance Lacroix to go up 1-0 in the first half. Both sides would settle into a groove the rest of the of half with the possessions changing swiftly and neither side establishing momentum.
Plattsburgh would respond with their first goal of the game off of the foot of Brian Coughlan to tie the game up at one a piece mid way through the second half of the game. In the end, Coughlan would seal the game for the Cardinals off of a penalty kick late in the second half to give the Cardinals a 2-1 victory.
"We needed to execute and score a second goal early in the second half. The tying goal for them swung the momentum", added Gondek. "Late in the game we had to go for the win and we got exposed. Now we are forced to win our last three SUNYAC games to have a shot at the post season."
