OSWEGO, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State women's basketball team built a first-half lead over the undefeated Oswego Lakers, but would eventually take a 76-66 loss in the SUNYAC opener for both teams. Fredonia State falls to 3-3 overall and 0-1 in conference play, while the Lakers moved to 7-0/1-0.
Renee Park led the Devils with 14 points and added three steals. Sarah Seaman was the only other scorer in double digits, scoring 14 and tying Amber Louis with four assists. Louis added eight points and Mary Culeton had nine.
After five lead changes in the first quarter, the Lakers would find themselves on top 19-15.Â
Fredonia State would battle back and take the lead on a three pointer by Kyla Smith, putting the Devils up 28-26 with 1:45 left before the half. They would head into the break with a 30-28 lead.
Laurell Brown and Seaman nailed jumpers to open the second half, giving the Devils their biggest lead of the game, six points, leading 34-28.
An 8-0 run would put the Lakers back in the driver's seat with a slim 38-36 lead. The game remained tight through the third. The Devils would claim their final lead of the game when Park nailed a three at the 3:50 mark, giving them a 48-47 lead.
Oswego closed the half outscoring the Devils 10-5 and taking a 56-53 lead into the fourth quarter.
A layup by Snyder and one made free throw by Seaman tied the game at 56. The Lakers'Â offense then found its rhythm and would outscore the Devils 15-3 to take its largest lead of the game of 12 points, 71-59, on its way to their seventh win of the season.
Culeton, Brown, and Snyder each had five rebounds to pace the Devils. Snyder would add six steals to her stat line.
Oswego was paced by Karleigh Leo with 23 points, one of four Lakers in double digits. Diamond Picket added 16 points, 10 rebounds, and six assists.
The Lakers had a 52-35 advantage on the boards, while the Devils outperformed them from beyond the arc, shooting 13-35 compared to 7-24 by the hosts.
The Devils return home on Friday to take on Cortland in a women's/men's doubleheader.
