ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State women's basketball team dropped a 57-47 contest at Oneonta on Thursday. The Devils were led by
Lauren Mickley (Danville, Ohio / Danville) with 14 points.
Katie Pitcher (Fulton, N.Y. / Hannibal) and
Isabella Wier (East Aurora, N.Y. / East Aurora) added 11 apiece. Wier added five steals, and
Mary Culeton (Oswego, N.Y. / Oswego) topped the Devils with seven rebounds.
Oneonta jumped out to an 8-0 lead. A layup by Mickley got the Devils on the board at the 5:52 mark. In the final minute of the quarter, a three by
Renee Park (Union Springs, N.Y. / Union Springs) cut the lead to 10-9.
The Devils would see their first lead late in the second quarter. Wier nailed a three at the 2:27 mark to put the Devils up, 23-22. For the game the Devils connected on five threes compared to none for the Red Dragons.
Oneonta scored the final four points to regain a 26-23 lead at the half.
The game remained close, and the Devils took their second lead of the game when Pitcher connected at the 6:51 mark of the third, putting the Devils up, 29-28. Oneonta then went on a 12-0 run, and would end the third up 42-33.
The Devils would not go away. Midway through the fourth, they went on a 9-0 run. Threes by Wier and Mickley, a three-point play by Pitcher brought the Devils withing four, 46-42. However, Oneonta would hang on for the win.
Oneonta had a big advantage at the line. They converted 21 of 26 free throws while the Devils went 4-9. Oneonta held a 40-34 edge in rebounding. Both teams connected on 18 field goals.
The Devils (7-5 / 2-3 SUNYAC) head to New Paltz tomorrow. Oneonta improves to 7-6 overall, and 4-2 in the SUNYAC.
