BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State volleyball team started the SUNYAC portion of its schedule in impressive fashion, dropping rival Buffalo State, 3-0. The Devils also claimed points in the
Battle by the Lake in the schools' first opportunity to earn points this fall.
Tied 5-all in the first set, the Devils (4-4, 1-0 SUNYAC) ran off eight straight points and would dominate the rest of the evening. The won their sets by scores of 25-17, 25-21, and 25-19.
In the second set, the Bengals would work up to a 19-16 lead before Fredonia State scored nine of the next 11 points. The Devils won the final set going wire-to-wire. The Bengals fell to 2-5, and 0-1 in the conference.
"We played very focused today," said head coach
Geoff Braun. "We didn't get caught up in any emotional swings and we had people step up in some key spots."
Christie Ackendorf hammered 11 kills while teammate
Emily Jones knocked down 10.
Selena Brown led the team with three aces and five blocks.
Kourtney Krchniak collected 29 assists, and
Sierra Keim had 13 kills.
Fredonia had a .212 hitting percentage for the match, including a .414 hitting percentage in the first set.
Next up for the spikers is a non-conference tournament this weekend at Nazareth.
