Devils fall to No. 25 Cortland

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State baseball team wrapped up its season with a pair of losses, 7-1 and 9-4, at the hands of Cortland.

Cortland scored a run in the first, four in the second, and one in the fourth and sixth innings off Fredonia State starter Sam Cestra, making his final appearance as a Blue Devil. Cestra left the game with two out in the sixth.

Ronald Brown came on in relief and had his strongest outing of the year. The sophomore from Brocton tossed 3 1/3 innings and struck out four while walking none and giving up three hits.

Brain Chatt grounded out in the ninth to plate Tyler Phillips and avoid the shutout. The Devil offense was not shut out all year. Johnny Genau had a pair of hits to pace the Devils.

Game two was all Cortland early on. They scored four runs in both the first and second innings.

The Devils would fight back, plating four runs in the fifth inning. Kenneth Benitez, Matt Heffernan, and Jordan Maher each drove in a run for the Blue Devils.

Junior workhorse Kenny Ynoa provided solid relief, going 3 1/3 innings and allowing one run on two hits. Ynoa led the Devils with 10 appearances this season. Freshman Korey Canton went the final two innings without allowing a run while surrendering one hit.

The Devils finished the season with a 4-16 mark. They also played arguably the toughest schedule in Division 3, currently ranking No. 2 in strength of schedule out of the 369 teams that competed this year. All their losses came against regionally ranked opponents.
