FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The 2019-20 Fredonia State Men's Track & Field season begins Saturday. The Blue Devils will participate in the Brockport Season Opener, the first of five indoor meets in the regular-season portion of the schedule. The post-season portion consists of the SUNYAC meet on the last two days of February, the All-Atlantic Region meet the first weekend of March, and -- for those that qualify -- the NCAA meet in mid-March.
The outdoor season is comprised of five regular-season meets, one last-chance meet, and the same there championship meets as indoors.
Head Coach
Tom Wilson expects his most consistent scoring to come in the triple jump, the middle distance runs, the pole vault, and the long jump.
"Accountability, that is what we are looking for from everyone on the team," Wilson said. "We want every member of this team to know what they need to do and what their teammates need to do each and every week. We want this team to have grade-point averages over 3.0 during the 2020 spring semester. We only have two total seniors, so we are looking for our large underclassman to steer the wheel. We are going to need a lot of freshmen to step up and take chances."
Here's to what to look for as the Blue Devils embark upon the 2019-20 season:
Top returners and their events:
- Dan Sudyn (long jump, triple jump) -- He missed qualifying for nationals in the indoor triple jump last year by 1 centimeter.
- Jonah McGrath (pole vault, triple jump) -- Third outdoors at SUNYACs in the pole vault.
- Aaron Cember (shot put, weight throw) -- Eighth in the shot at the SUNYAC meet. A tri-captain this season.
- Marcus Torres (200 meters, 400 meters) -- Also a tri-captain.
- Alec Wright (200 meters, 400 meters) -- Eight outdoors in the 400 at the SUNYAC meet as a freshman.
Top newcomers and their events:
Will Guagliardo (200 meters, 400 meters);
Toby Onuoha (high jump, 400 meters);
Topher Elkins (200 meters, 400 meters);
Collin Barmore (800 meters, 3,000 meters);
Devin Eddy (long jump, triple jump, sprints).
Head Coach Wilson's outlook for this weekend: "For the cross-country runners (to) empty the tank. They are all in strong conditioning shape, and the expectation is to run hard and race for personal-best times. As for those who have been training for this indoor season, the technical events (LJ, TJ, HJ, PV, SP, WT), we are looking to see how everyone handles their first competition. We want everyone on the team to "keep it simple" and compete to win!"
