Season-ending heartbreak: OT loss keeps Devils out of playoffs

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Fredonia State's bid to claim a SUNYAC Women's Soccer tournament berth for the second straight season fell just short Saturday with a 2-1 overtime loss to Cortland.

Nursing a 1-0 lead deep into the second half, the Blue Devils were unable to stave off the Red Dragons, who completed an unbeaten conference regular season (7-0-2) with goals by Alannah O'Shea and Jayden Kelley. Cortland is 10-5-2 overall.

The loss dropped the Blue Devils to 3-4-2 in the conference and 6-9-2 overall. They finished in seventh place with 11 points, one point back of sixth-place Oneonta. The top six teams qualified for the conference tournament, which starts next week.

Gabby Alston scored in the 23rd minute, her sixth of the season, to stake Fredonia State to a 1-0 lead. She put in a rebound after Cortland goalkeeper Danika Svendsen stopped Fredonia State's Jordan Barrett.

The Blue Devils held the lead until the 88th minute when O'Shea scored on a penalty kick to tie the game at 1-1. The foul leading up to the PK occurred right at the edge of the 18-yard line, with both players falling inside the box after the collision.

Cortland's Kelley wasted little time using that momentum to put an end to the game – and to the Blue Devils' season – with a shot from the left wing into the top of the net just 38 seconds into extra time.

Fredonia State goalkeeper Sabrina Suriani was credited with six saves. She, Alston, and Barrett were among the six freshmen who started Saturday for Head Coach Chris Case. Two other freshmen saw significant playing time off the bench.

The Blue Devils dressed just two seniors all season, four-year player and co-captain Shania Platt and 2019 leading scorer Melanie Minotti, who finished with seven goals and 15 points.

Saturday's game started three hours late due to busing problems encountered by the Blue Devils.
