Geneseo prevails, 3-1, in meeting of ranked teams

GENESEO, N.Y. -- Fredonia fell to Geneseo, 3-1, a meeting of two nationally ranked men's hockey teams Friday night. The win was the 13th straight for the Knights, a new team record.

Three different players had goals for the Knights (16-1-1 overall, 8-1-1 SUNYAC), defending conference champs and No. 2 in the USCHO.com NCAA Division III and D3Hockey.com polls.

The Blue Devils (11-3-2 overall, 5-2-0 SUNYAC) were No. 15 in the latest USCHO.com rankings. The loss ended a three-game winning streak.

The lone Fredonia goal was scored by Jacob Haynes (Whitby, Ont.). Cycling the puck on a power play, Haynes took a short pass from Charlie Manley (Orchard Park, N.Y.) and wired a shot into the top corner at 15:25 of the third period. Victor Tracy (Danderyd, Sweden) was credited with the secondary assist. It was the seventh goal of the season by Haynes.

Geneseo took a 1-0 lead at 5:32 of the first period during a delayed penalty against Fredonia. Jumping off the bench to join the rush, extra attacker Chris Perna received a pass just inside the blue line and sent a shot through a screen past Blue Devil goaltender Eric Bogart (London, Ont.). The Blue Devils averted further damage when they killed the penalty. Geneseo came into the game with the No. 1 ranked power play in NCAA Division III, yet were 0 of 6 on the night.

The biggest goal of the first period came with Fredonia on a power play. The Knights won a faceoff in front of goaltender Devin McDonald. Duggie Legrone's clearing attempt deflected off a Fredonia defenseman at the blue line. That led to a 2-on-1 rush with Dan Bosio dropping a pass to a streaking Carson Kelly, who snapped a shot past Bogart from between the face-off circles. The short-handed goal came at 19:14 and gave Geneseo a 2-0 lead.

The second period was scoreless until 1:38 remained when Brenden Miller, alone in front of the net, scored from close range after Ryan Burnett won the puck behind the cage and passed it out front.

The goal by Haynes for Fredonia was the only scoring in the third period. The loss was the first of the season for Bogart, who won his first eight decisions. He finished with 27 saves. McDonald had 26 saves for Geneseo.

Fredonia's home game Saturday vs. Brockport has been postponed and rescheduled for next Tuesday at 5 p.m. in the Steele Hall Ice Arena.
