FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The first collegiate goal by Fredonia sophomore defender
Erin Pratt (Schenectady, N.Y./Schalmont) was the game-winner Friday in Fredonia's 3-1 SUNYAC women's soccer contest vs. New Paltz at University Stadium.
With the start time moved up 45 minutes to beat a predicted thunderstorm, Pratt beat the rain and the Hawks when she lofted a long shot from the right sideline which bounced over the head of New Paltz goalkeeper Megan Tornatore in the 72nd minute.
Senior midfielder
Abby Price (Naples, N.Y./Naples) scored Fredonia's first goal and sophomore forward
Danielle Spring (Alleghany, N.Y./Allegany-Limestone) added insurance. Freshman goalkeeper
Abbey Monahan (Warsaw, N.Y./Warsaw) was rarely tested, yet finished with four saves. It was her first collegiate win in goal.
The Blue Devils improved to 3-4 overall and 1-0 in the SUNYAC. The Hawks left town at 1-7 and 0-1.
Price opened the scoring in the 11th minute when she slid a mid-range shot past Tornatore, who had come off her line to cut down the angle. Freshman midfielder
Sophie Richiusa (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) assisted with a short through ball after dribbling past defenders through the midfield. It was Price's second goal of the season.
New Paltz's Rachael Purtell tied the score at 1-1 in the 30th with a long shot from the right flank which deflected in off the far post. Annaliese Gorr assisted.
The score was still 1-1 -- and storm clouds had gathered to the west -- when Pratt broke the tie. The game-winning play included a short drop pass by freshman forward
Claire Roosa (Randolph, N.Y./Randolph). Just over four minutes later, in the 77th minute, Spring upped the margin to two goals when she tapped the ball past Tornatore following a scramble in front of the goal. It was Spring's third goal this season, which leads the Blue Devils. Junior midfielder
Shania Platt (Chaffee, N.Y./Pioneer) was credited with an assist.
The Blue Devils are back in SUNYAC action Saturday when they play host to Oneonta at 1 p.m. The Red Dragons were defeated 1-0 Friday at Buffalo State.
