Breakthrough win on record-setting day

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. -- A season-long wait ended with a late-game rally and a team women's lacrosse record was shattered Saturday in Fredonia's 16-15 overtime win Saturday over New Paltz.

Sophomore attack Madeline Haney (Macedon, N.Y./Victor) scored the game-winning goal with four seconds left in the first overtime as the Blue Devils (1-12 overall, 1-5 SUNYAC) won for the first time this season. Freshman attack Emily Ellis (Sanborn, N.Y./Niagara Wheatfield) assisted on the game-winner, which came while Fredonia was a player-up and completed a comeback from three goals down in the final four minutes.

The afternoon also belonged to senior goalkeeper Nicole Burrows (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) and freshman attack Casey Villagomez (West Seneca, N.Y./West Seneca West). Burrows made 28 saves to shatter Fredonia's single-game team record. The previous mark was 20 saves held by Burrows and two others. She is second on the Fredonia career saves list with 565. Villagomez led the Fredonia offense with seven goals and one assist. Her last three goals erased a 15-12 Fredonia deficit in the final 3:47, including the third with 12 seconds left in regulation to force overtime.

The Blue Devils killed a two-minute penalty in overtime, then New Paltz was issued a yellow card with :18 seconds left prior to Haney's game-winning goal.

Haney and freshman defender Alli Coon (Livonia, N.Y./Livonia) added three goals, freshman midfielder Alexis Skowron (Elma, N.Y./Iroquois) had two goals, and freshman attack Arriana Smith (Sanborn, N.Y./Niagara Wheatfield) scored once. Villagomez was credited with five draw controls and three caused turnovers while Skowron collected three ground balls.

The next game for Fredonia is Tuesday at Geneseo.
