Devils tie Potsdam, move into 4th place

POTSDAM, N.Y. -- Fredonia tied Potsdam, 2-2, and moved into a tie for fourth place in SUNYAC men's hockey Friday night.

The Blue Devils (9-9-4 overall / 5-7-1 SUNYAC) pulled even with Brockport (5-8-1 SUNYAC), with one game in hand. Both teams are one point ahead of Plattsburgh and Potsdam and two points ahead of Cortland in the fight for the final playoff spots in the six-team conference bracket. Fredonia visits Plattsburgh on Saturday night.

The Blue Devils took a 2-0 lead Friday on power-play goals by Mike Freeman (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) and Tommy DeFelice (Tolland, Conn.) in the early stages of the first two periods at Potsdam's Maxcy Hall. The Bears (8-9-5 overall / 4-7-2 SUNYAC) rallied with two goals in the third period and dominated the overtime before time ran out.

Freeman's goal, his fifth of the season, put the Devils up 1-0 at 2:04 of the first when he found the net on the short side with a shot from the left dot. Defelice picked up an assist for a cross-ice pass which set up Freeman on the opposite wing. The same two combined at 1:25 of the second period, this time with Defelice connecting from the right dot, his first goal of the season. Colin Valentine (Turnersville, N.J.) picked up an assist on the first goal and Sam Wilbur (Saginaw, Mich.) earned an assist on the second.

Potsdam goaltender Brendan McMenimen turned aside several other good scoring changes by Fredonia in the first two periods before his teammates gained traction in the third period. Dylan VanderEsch scored into the short side from the left circle on a power play at the 10:51 mark. Paul Michura scored the equalizer at 16:46 when he redirected a slapshot from the point by Kyle Thacker. Thacker also assisted on the Vander Esch goal.

Each team had 32 shots and each goaltender made 30 saves through regulation. The Blue Devils were then outshot 6-0 in the overtime with Anton Rosen (Orsa, Sweden) making all six stops (and 36 in the game). Potsdam ended the game on a power play which it was unable to convert. The Blue Devils were 6 of 7 on the penalty kill.

The tie gave the Blue Devils a 8-0-3 mark when they lead after two periods. They are also 6-1-2 when they lead after the first period.
