FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia's 5-1 men's hockey win Friday over Morrisville State moved the Blue Devils one step closer to clinching a berth in the SUNYAC playoff berth when the conference tournament starts next week.
The Blue Devils (10-10-4 overall / 6-8-1 SUNYAC) scored on its first two shots on goal and never looked back against the visiting Mustangs (6-15-3 overall / 3-12-0 SUNYAC). Five different players had goals and a dozen earned at least one point in the victory.
Meanwhile, Anton Rosen (Orsa, Sweden) stopped 38 of 39 shots to improve to 8-3-2 this season. Morrisville State's Stevie Ray Adams scored midway through the third period to ruin Rosen's bid for his first collegiate shutout.
Tommy DeFelice (Tolland, Conn.) scored on a power play just 1:20 into the first period and
Sam Wilbur (Saginaw, Mich.) made it 2-0 at the 2:17 on similar looking plays. Both broke in alone on Morrisville State's starting goalie Sal Stalteri, who was making just his fifth appearance and second start of the season. It was the second goal of the season by DeFelice and the team-leading 11th by Wilbur.
Jimmy Morgan (Highlands Ranch, Col.) made it 3-0 with a snhort-handed goal at 9:31 of the first period, his seventh of the season. Like his teammates before him, Morgan had a open path on Stalteri.
Ryan Dunner (Glassboro, N.J.) made it 4-0 at 13:05, his second goal in as many games. Stalteri made 13 saves in the period before being pulled in favor of Jared Young to start the second period.Â
Young stopped 24 of 25 shots the rest of the way, the only blemish being a goal by
Colin Valentine (Turnersville, N.J.) with 1:08 left in the game during a delayed penalty against the Mustangs.
The Blue Devils improved to 6-8-1 in the conference, tied with Plattsburgh for the sixth and final spot -- one point behind Potsdam and two points ahead of Brockport. With a win or tie Saturday vs. Morrisville, the Blue Devils clinch a berth and still would have a chance to move into fourth place and earn a home playoff game.
Playoff scenarios were still being determined as of 10:30 p.m. Friday.
