Pitching solid in split with New Paltz

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- A trio of Fredonia pitchers allowed just three runs in Monday's SUNYAC softball doubleheader with the New Paltz Hawks.

Katie Yudin (Liverpool, N.Y.) picked up a 2-1 win in relief of starter Sam Seegar (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) in the first game. Emily Shellenberger (Philadelphia, Pa.) started and took the 2-0 loss in the second game. In each game, the Blue Devils allowed only seven hits.

New Paltz countered with a pair of complete games by Lauren Cappello. Only walk-off heroics by Fredonia's Nikki Lent (Yaphank, N.Y.) in the opener kept Capello from winning both games. She allowed three hits and struck out three in each game.

Lent laced a first-pitch, two-out single to center to score both Fredonia runs in the opener. The inning included a lead-off single by Yudin, a New Paltz error, and a sacrifice bunt by Shellenberger.

The Blue Devils had runners as far as second base twice and as far as third just once in the nightcap. Their best scoring chance came when Yudin looped a double inside the line in left leading off the fifth. She was sacrificed to third with one out but was left standed there.

The split was costlier to the Blue Devils as they ended the day 1-5 in the SUNYAC (11-11 overall) heading into Wednesday's road doubleheader at Oswego. New Paltz headed home with a 5-3 conference mark, 7-13 overall.
