BRONX, N.Y. -- Fredonia was no match for Fordham's long-range shooting in Friday's exhibition opener at Rose Hill Gym.
The Rams outscored the Blue Devils 51-6 from three-point range and cruised to a 79-41 victory in the Division 1 vs. Division 3 matchup.
Senior forward
Ian Helps (Bronx, N.Y. / Greater New York Academy) led Fredonia in scoring with 11 points. Freshman forward
Jonathan McDonald (Brooklyn, N.Y. / High School for Public Service) added 10 points.
Tre Evans led the Rams with 19 points, including 5 of 9 from three-point range. Fordham was 17 for 43 from beyond the arc compared to 2 of 13 for Fredonia.
The exhibition game was set up between the two head coaches, Fredonia's
Philip Seymore and Fordham's Jeff Neubauer, both former assistant coaches at the University of Richmond.
SHORT, BUT SWEET: The Blue Devils took their only lead 2-0 on a short tear-drop by Helps. The lead lasted just 19 seconds.
IMPACT PLAYERS: Helps was 4 of 8 from the field and 3 of 5 from the line for his 11 points. ... Dante Williams (Buffalo, N.Y. / Hutch Tech) got off to a good start: 2 of 2 from the field plus two rebounds ... McDonald, a 6-7 freshman, made a good first impression with several strong moves to the basket. He was 3 of 8 from the field and led the Blue Devils with eight rebounds.
LONG-RANGE SUCCESS: The Rams asserted themselves by hitting 6 of their first 13 three-point attempts to open a 22-6 lead with 11:45 left in the first half. They finished the first half 9 of 22 on treys.
GOOD RUN: Helps scored five straight points and McDonald added a layup off a pretty feed from
Keith Ruiz to complete a 7-0 Fredonia run.during a stretch late in the first half.
IN & OUT: Seymore used all 16 healthy players in the game. Neubauer used 11 players.
RECRUITING TRIP: Several Fredonia recruits were in attendance and stopped by to visit with Seymore both before and after the game ... In addition, Fredonia held an admissions event at a nearby restaurant for high school students from the Greater New York area.
FACE IN THE CROWD: Blue Devil Hall of Famer John Fischetti was at the game.
