Late surge carries Oneonta over Devils

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Oneonta scored five the the last six goals Saturday and overtook Fredonia, 12-9, in SUNYAC women's lacrosse at University Stadium.

Senior attack Katie Miller (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) scored with 4:02 left to forge a 9-9 tie. It was his third goal of the game and 24th this spring.

Out of a Red Dragon timeout following Miller's goal, Kelsey Cohen gathered the ensuing draw, raced through the defense, and scored the tie-breaking goal with 3:52 remaining. Allison Butler and Taylor Casey scored insurance goals as Oneonta improved to 5-9 overall and kept its SUNYAC playoff hopes alive at 2-4.

The loss dropped the Blue Devils to 5-10 overall and put their SUNYAC playoff hopes in doubt with a 1-5 conference mark and two games left -- Tuesday at Buffalo State and next Saturday at Potsdam.

After trailing 6-2, Fredonia scored twice late in the first half and the first four goals of the second half to take an 8-7 lead on a goal by sophomore midfielder Audrey Yokopovich (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas), her 24th of the season. After the teams traded goals, Oneonta went on its winning rally.

Yokopovich and senior defender Juliana Kotas (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) had two goals each while freshmen midfielders Jade Williams (Tully, N.Y./Lafayette) and Samantha Spiess (Fairport, N.Y./Penfield) had one goal each.

Yokopovich also had three ground balls, Yokopovich and Spiess two caused turnovers each, and Miller six draw controls.

The three Fredonia graduating seniors -- Kotas, defender Lauren Metz (Williamsville, N.Y./Lancaster), and defender Jessica Tuttle (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) -- were recognized prior to their final collegiate home game.
