AUBURNDALE, FL. -- Down 4-1 heading into the top of the sixth inning, the Fredonia baseball team rallied for three runs each in the sixth and seventh and came away with a 7-5 victory over Minnesota-Morris on Friday.
Freshman
Kevin Yirinec finished with two hits, including a triple and double, while
Kyle Sherman came off the bench to deliver a three-run double.
Joshua Crocetti added a pair of hits in the Devils' 13-hit attack.
Jason Weyman tossed four innings of relief for the win, and
Zach Lyman threw a neat ninth, striking out the side for the save.
Freshman Joshua Koepsell got his first collegiate start, and settled in to throw four solid innings before giving way to Weyman.
Koepsell allowed a run in each the first and second innings to spot the Cougars a 2-0 lead.
Fredonia halved the lead with a run in the top of the fifth.
Matt Wilhelm walked and
James Krolikowski doubled to put runners at second and third. A fielder's choice off the bat of
Patrick Sheehan accounted for the RBI.
The Cougars quickly added two runs in the bottom half of the inning to go up 4-1.
Alexio Medina singled to start the sixth. After stealing second, he came around to score on a double by Yirinec. Crocetti followed with a base hit to put runners on the corners.
Ciro Frontale then delivered a pinch-hit single, and Krolikowski grounded out to score the next two runs.
In the seventh with two outs, Fredonia loaded the bases on a hit, walk and bad-hop that was ruled an error. Sherman then smoked a double in front of the diving outfielder and all three runs scored.
The Cougars added two runs in the seventh, but that would be all they could muster before Weyman and Lyman slammed the door.
The Devils improve to 6-3, while Minnesota-Morris is now 3-4.
Fredonia takes on conference foe Oswego on Friday and Saturday in a three-game set.
