Devils 0-2 after loss at Montclair State

MONTCLAIR, N.J. -- Fredonia lost to host Montclair State in women's lacrosse Sunday afternoon. Junior midfielder Kristie Kleine (Cazenovia, N.Y./Cazenovia) had six of Fredonia's goals in the 10-8 setback which dropped the Blue Devils to 0-2. Freshman midfielder Jade Williams (Tully, N.Y./Lafayette) had Fredonia's other two goals. Sophomore goalkeeper Nicole Burrows (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) was credited with eight saves.

Montclair State (2-1) jumped to a 4-0 lead before Kleine put the Blue Devils on the scoreboard with a free-position goal 10 minutes into the first half. Kleine made it 4-2 with Montclair State minus a player because of a yellow card. The hosts pushed their lead back out to four goals, 6-2, before Fredonia mounted a 3-0 rally.  A draw control and breakaway by Kleine came just before halftime. A caused turnover by senior defender Jessica Tuttle (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) leading to  a goal by Williams came early in the second half. That was quickly followed by a draw control from freshman midfielder Samantha Spiess (Fairport, N.Y./Penfield) and another breakaway goal by Kleine.

Down 6-5, Fredonia regained possession with a chance to continue its run, only to have Montclair State goalkeeper Rebecca Myers stop two tying-shot tries, first by sophomore midfielder Audrey Yokopovich (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas), then by freshman midfielder Monica Van Donsel (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland).
A 3-0 Montclair State ensued and the Blue Devils were unable to get within one goal again.

Francesca Verrone had three goals to lead Montclair State, which outshot Fredonia 28-17; Myers had eight saves. Top field player was Kelsey Maguire with two draw controls, two caused turnovers, and four groundballs. Williams, Spiess, and senior defender Juliana Kotas (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) had two draw controls each. Four different Blue Devils each caused one turnover while Burrows and Tuttle led in groundballs with three each.

The Blue Devils have a week to prepare for Denison, who'll return to University Stadium next Sunday at 1 p.m. in a rematch of last year's NCAA First Round game.
