NEW PALTZ, N.Y. -- Fredonia's record-setting women's basketball season drew to a close Friday with a 71-41 loss to Geneseo in the semifinals of the SUNYAC Tournament.
The Blue Devils never led against the defending champs, who'll meet the winner of Friday's other semifinal game between Oneonta and host New Paltz.
Alexis Cheatham (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) had 11 points to lead Fredonia. .
Allison McKenna led Geneseo's balanced with 18 points. She also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. Dana Cohan added 12 points and dished out seven assists. Three players had eight points each.
The loss ended Fredonia's season at 19-8. The win total was two better than the previous school record for wins in a season.
Geneseo improved to 20-6, including three wins this season over Fredonia. The Knights have won the last 18 meetings between the teams.
The Blue Devils found themselves in a big hole early. They trailed by as many as 13 points in the first quarater and by 19 in the second quarter.
Using numerous lineup combinations, Blue Devil head coach Linda Hill-Ma cDonald kept searching for a solution for her team's poor first-half shooting (8 of 33 / 24.2 percent). The Blue Devils took 18 attempts from beyond the arc, making three. Geneseo was 2 for 5 from three-point range in the first half.
The Geneseo lead continued to grow in the second half as Fredonia continued to struggle at both ends of the floor. The Blue Devils finished the game 14 of 61 from the field, including 6.of 27 from beyond the arc, and were outrebounded 47-34. Geneseo was 30 of 61 from the field.
Friday's game marked the final appearance in a Fredonia uniform for three Fredonia seniors,
Sabrina Macaulay (Newark, N.Y./Newark),
Sammy Villarini (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) and
Katie Devine (Clarence, ,N.Y./Clarence). Macaulay had eight points to finish with 1,010 as a collegian, ninth on Fredonia's all-time career list. She also had 10 rebounds in her final college game.
Cheatham, with 926 points over three seasons, is 10th on the career scoring list.
NOTES: Past SUNYAC all-conference and all-tournament players -- including Cheatham and Macaulay -- and former coaches of the year were recognized between games of Friday's doubleheader. ... When Macaulay fouled out in the final seconds of the game, she received an ovation from fans of both teams ... The Blue Devils were making their fourth SUNYAC semifinal appearance. They have yet to appear in a championship game.
