FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia women's basketball team hung on for an 85-78 victory vs. Buffalo State on Friday. Freshman
Jenna Einink (Mayville, N.Y. / Chautauqua Lake) and senior
Sabrina Macaulay (Newark, N.Y. / Newark) turned in a pair of dominating performances with 26 points apiece. Einink added 11 boards, three assists and three blocks.
Alexis Cheatham (Lockport, N.Y. / Lockport) finished with 10 points and five assists.
The teams traded leads the first quarter in a fast-paced, tight game. Buffalo State managed a 27-25 lead at the first intermission. They would lead for most of the second quarter.
Fredonia would not regain the lead until 1:05 left before the half when Einink converted a layup. The teams would each trade field goals to close out the half and the Devils led 43-42 at that point.
The Devils came out strong in the third quarter, outscoring the Bengals 28-18 and led 71-60 heading into the final frame.
The Bengals did not give in, coming within three points of the lead in the half, but were never able to catch Fredonia.
Buffalo State falls to 9-14 and 5-11 in the conference. They were led by Britt Perry with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Jordan Yastremski added 11 points and 12 boards, and Keyonte Edwards had 13 points and nine boards.
With the win, the Devils improve to 16-7 overall and 11-5 in the SUNYAC. The have two regular-season games remaining against the SUNYAC co-leaders Oneonta and New Paltz, both with 12-3 records.
They will play those games in Steele Hall next weekend. They are also in position to possibly host a post-season game. It would be the first in team history. The third and fourth seeds each get a home contest, while the top two earn byes. Geneseo currently sits in third place at 10-4, and Cortland (9-6) trails the Devils by a game-and-a-half.
