GLASSBORO, N.J. -- Fredonia women lost just one spot in the team standings from last year while completing Saturday in the NCAA Division III Women's Cross Country championship at Rowan University.
The Blue Devils were 12th this year -- out of 43 full teams -- compared to 11th a year ago. While none of the seven women qualified for nationals immediately, sophomore
Brenna Donovan (Youngstown, N.Y./Lewiston-Porter) has an outside chance when the full field is announced Saturday night.
Donovan completed the 6,000-meter course in 21:55.5. As far back as 73rd early, she rallied to 19th place after 3.7 kilometers before settling back to 29th spot at the end. She was competing in her first regional.
She was followed by two fellow sophomores,
Hannah Kurbs (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) in 55th and
Carly DeBono (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) in 71st. Next for Fredonia was senior
Julia Johnson (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) in 87th and another sophomore,
Stephanie Wojnowski (Rochester, N.Y./Eastridge), in 93rd.
Displacement runners were seniors
Bonnie Binggeli (Walworth, N.Y./Ruben A. Crillio) and
Kara Hall (Fredonia, N.Y./Byron-Bergen), while sophomore
Kristen Guarino (Bergen, N.Y./Byron-Bergen) was part of Fredonia's traveling team but did not race.
Kurbs picked up 21 spots from the first checkpoint to the finish, DeBono picked up nine, Johnson 45 spots, and Wojnowski 40 spots.Â
Compared to last year, Kurbs moved from 92nd to 55th, Johnson from 101st to 87th, and Wojnowski from 99th to 93rd.Â
