OLEAN, N.Y. -- After winning three of their last four SUNYAC games, the Fredonia baseball team dropped a pair of conference games against No. 2 Cortland on Monday. Down 8-0 in Game 2, the Blue Devils battled back and scored one run in the fourth and four in the fifth to trim the Red Dragon's lead to three, 8-5, but were unable to overcome the early deficit, falling 10-5.
In the bottom of the fourth inning
Erik Krohl lined an RBI single to score
Kenny Johnston for Fredonia's first run.
In the fifth, the Devils' rally began with one-out singles by
Ryan Carmody and
Ciro Frontale, After an infield pop up for the second out,
Dan Cecilia plated Carmody with a base hit, Johnston laced a two-run double to make it 8-4. That was followed by an RBI double from
Quinn Danahy to put the Devils within three, 8-5.
Prior to that, Fredonia loaded the bases in the third inning, but could not push across a run.
The Red Dragons were able to push across runs in the sixth and seventh to make it a 10-5 ballgame. Cortland starting pitcher Brandon McClain improved to 3-0, despite being touched up for nine hits and five runs in 4 2/3 innings.
Fredonia outhit Cortland, 10-9. Cecila, Johnston and Carmody had two hits apiece. Junior
Joe Korszun took the loss in 1 2/3 innings of work. He was relieved by
Joe DiLeo who struck out three in 2 1/3 ininings. Freshman
Kyle Smith pitched the final three innings, allowing two runs on three hits.
The Blue Devils got off on the wrong foot in Game 1 after pegging the first three batters and giving up eight runs in the first three innings. Cortland cruised to a 15-2 victory.
Both Fredonia runs came courtesy a two-run single from Cecilia.
After picking up a win yesterday vs. New Paltz,
Matt Wilhelm took the loss in Game 1 going four innings giving up seven runs on six hits.
Cecilia finished the day going three for seven with three RBI.
The Blue Devils dropped to 9-12 (4-5 SUNYAC) while Cortland improved to 23-2 (8-1 SUNYAC).
The Blue Devils will be back in action Tuesday as they finish the series at Ludwig Field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
