POTSDAM, N.Y. -- Despite being outshot significantly, the Potsdam Bears stayed unbeaten with a 4-2 SUNYAC men's hockey victory Saturday over the Fredonia Blue Devils.
Todd Thomas scored two power-play goals in the first period and an empty-netter in the final minute while Brendan
McMenimen had 38 saves as the Bears improved to 4-0 overall and in the SUNYAC.
The Blue Devils fell to 1-2-1 overall and 0-2-1 in the SUNYAC despite outshooting the Bears, 40-21. In addition, the Blue Devils clanged several shots off iron behind McMenimen. Potsdam had one goal negated by a penalty.
Zach White (Taberg, N.Y.), a junior defenseman, had Fredonia's first goal, his first of the season and fourth as a collegian, while sophomore forward
Samuel Wilbur (Saginaw, Mich.) netted his first collegiate goal late in the third period. Each goal got the Blue Devils within one goal. They never pulled even.
Fredonia cut its deficit to 2-1 on White's power-play goal at 12:14 of the second period. Wilbur and senior defenseman
Ryan Wilkinson (Calgary, Alberta) had assists.
It took Potsdam just 30 seconds to regain its two-goal advantage on a goal by Jake Butler.
Wilbur's goal came at 12:32 of the third period. Junior forward
Hunter Long (Lebanon, Tenn.) and freshman forward
Bobby Polachek (Kingston, Pa.) were credited with assists. It was Polachek's first collegiate point.
The Blue Devils kept up the pressure -- as they did most of the game -- yet could not score the equalizer, even after senior goaltender
Jeff Flagler (Owen Sound, Ont.) left the net in the final minute in favor of an extra skater. Thomas made the Blue Devils pay with a empty-net goal to complete his hattrick.
Fredonia was 1 of 8 on the power play.
The Blue Devils will look to regroup with a home-and-home series against Morrisville State next Friday and Saturday. The Saturday game is at home.
