BOXSCORE WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Fredonia men's soccer opened its 2014 season with a 2-1 win Friday afternoon over Hampden-Sydney at The "Turk" D.C. Classic hosted by Catholic University.

Both Blue Devil goals came on near-bookend penalty kicks -- the first by senior co-captain Chase Lipshie (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) resulting in a 1-0 lead in the third minute, and the game-winner by junior co-captain Mike Biggane (Amherst, N.Y.) in the 90th minute.

Mohamed Hussein (Buffalo, N.Y.) draw the foul to set up Lipshie's goal and Ryan Ross (Grand Island, N.Y.) was taken down prior to the goal by Biggane.

The official time of Biggane's goals is listed as coming at 89:45.

Making his Blue Devil debut, junior goalkeeper Sammy Torrelli (Akron, N.Y.) made two saves. Hampden-Sydney's only goal was scored by Liam Hogan in the 37th minute to forge a 1-1 tie. Torrelli is a transfer from Monroe Community College in Rochester, N.Y.

The Blue Devils were outshot 8-7 and yielded nine corner kicks against only two of their own. Lipshie led the team with two shots. Five other players had one shot each.

"Defensively," head coach P.J. Gondek said, "we were a bit disorganized in the first half." Physical play throughout played to the Blue Devils' advantage. "Our depth won the game," Gondek said, "as freshmen played a big role. The end of the game our freshness with subs got us our goal."

The "Turk" D.C. Classic resumes Saturday, with Blue Devils meeting nationally ranked Dickenson at 2 p.m. The Red Devils, 3-0 winners Friday over Catholic, are No. 24 in the National Soccer Coaches' NCAA Division III pre-season poll.
