Oneonta ousts Devils from playoff contention

BOXSCORE 1 | BOXSCORE 2 ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State's flickering playoff hopes were extinguished Saturday with a pair of SUNYAC softball losses to the Oneonta Red Dragons.

The Blue Devils, who needed to win the doubleheader and then get some help, were officially eliminated when they lost the opener, 2-1. Their 8-2 loss of Game 2 left them with a 6-12 conference record, and 9-18 overall. The Red Dragons improved to 15-3 in the SUNYAC (25-9 overall) and nailed down the No. 1 seed and the right to host the conference tournament starting Thursday.

Kelsey Gannett (Jr.; Endwell, N.Y.) took the loss in Game 1. She was touched for a first-inning, two-run homer by Marlene Cuevas and pitched scoreless ball the rest of the way, allowing five hits, two walks, with four strikeouts. Her record dropped to 7-8.

Oneonta's Sabrina DeAngelis, who improved to 14-5, allowed hits to the first two Fredonia State batters and then only one hit thereafter. The lone run she allowed was unearned -- a one-out single by Kim Lotocki (Soph.; Hamburg, N.Y.) followed by a two-out Oneonta throwing error. It gave the Blue Devils a short-lived 1-0 lead.

Fredonia State also broke out on top in Game 2 with a first-inning run. They also scored a run in the third inning to take a 2-1 lead before Oneonta answered with four runs in the last of the third off losing pitcher Alyssa Brognano (Sr.; New Paltz, N.Y.).

DeAngelis returned to the circle for Oneonta and allowed both Blue Devil runs -- a first-inning double by Maddy Stavish (Fr.; Allegany, N.Y.) followed by a passed ball and a fly to right by Alyssa Morgan (Soph.; Homer, N.Y.), and a two-out RBI single in the third by Morgan following a single by Kate Nicholson (Jr.; Heuvelton, N.Y.). Katie O'Flynn relieved DeAngelis in the fourth inning and picked up the win.

The Blue Devils are scheduled to host Alfred University at 3 p.m. Monday.
