No. 20 Devils pull away on Buffalo State

BOXSCORE BUFFALO, N.Y. – Fredonia State scored five unanswered goals to erase an early deficit, using the momentum to roll to a 13-7 SUNYAC victory over Buffalo State in women's lacrosse.
 
Down 3-1 early in the first half, the Blue Devils answered with goals by Kristie Kleine (Fr.; Cazenovia, N.Y.), Sam Owen (Fr.; Horseheads, N.Y.), Katie Glagolev (Jr.; Webster, N.Y.), another by Kleine, and one by Juliana Kotas (Soph.; Lancaster, N.Y.). Kleine, Owen, and Marissa Cussins (Jr.; Corning, N.Y.) had assists during the run.
 
After Buffalo State scored late in the half, the Blue Devils closed out the half with a goal and ran off four straight goals to start the second half. Their 10-1 scoring advantage ran over a span of 41 minutes, 50 seconds over the two halves.
 
Cussins and Owen finished with three goals and one assist each for the Blue Devils, who improved to 10-3 overall and 4-1 in the SUNYAC. They began the week ranked at No. 20 in the IWLCA NCAA Division III poll.
 
The loss dropped the Bengals to 7-6 overall, 2-4 in the SUNYAC.
 
Other top performers Wednesday for the Blue Devils were Kleine, with her two goals plus four assists. She also shared the team lead of three ground balls with three teammates – Christina Mathewson (Fr.; Watertown, N.Y.), Sarah Lindovski (Soph.; Baldwinsville, N.Y.), and Emily Polizzi (Fr.; Rushville, N.Y.).
 
Glagolev and Kotas had two goals each, while Polizzi had one. Mathewson made eight saves in the Blue Devil net, Polizzi took four draw controls, and Cussins caused three turnovers.
 
Niki Paulhardt paced Buffalo State's offense with three goals and two assists, while Kendra Thomas also scored three times. Meghan Farrell scored the Bengals other goal, and Alexis Wilensky chipped in a pair of assists. Colleen George finished with five saves in the loss.
 
The Blue Devils held a narrow advantage in several stat categories, including shots at 23-22 and draw controls at 12-10. They are back in action Saturday at Potsdam.
