FREDONIA, N.Y. -- It's been 290 days since the Fredonia men's basketball team has played a home game.
The Blue Devils return to friendlier confines Wednesday night when they take on Penn State Behrend. Game time is 7 p.m. in the Steele Hall Fieldhouse.
"It feels good, especially for our players" second-year head coach Phil Seymore said. "They've been waiting to sleep in their own bed and prepare for a home game. I'm excited to see them play in front of their friends and families."
The Blue Devils opened the season with five straight road games -- which could actually have been seven games. Two games were postponed Nov. 22 and Nov. 23 because of the November snowstorm in Western New York. One of those games has been rescheduled -- Jan. 27 at Medaille.
Their last home game was Feb. 15, a loss to Brockport during Seymore's first season in charge of the program. Only three players are back from that 2013-14 team, which struggled to a 6-19 finish. That means 13 players will be donning the home jersey for the first time Wednesday.
Among them is 6-5 freshman forward
Ian Helps (Bronx, N.Y./Greater New York Academy), who leads the Blue Devils in both scoring (14.8) and rebounding (9.6). Two junior guards, transfer
Kyree Hull and returnee
Robert Lyles, both Peekskill, N.Y. natives, are next in scoring with 12.2 and 11.4 points, respectively. All three are starters.
Freshman center
Tremaine Shelton (Buffalo, N.Y./Buffalo Academy for the Visual and Performing Arts) have started all five games so far this season. Others to receive starting assignments are junior guard-forward
Bayron Carter (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill), junior guard
Alexander Grace (Bemus Point, N.Y./Maple Grove), and freshman guard
Max Pearce (Tuckahoe, N.Y./Tuckahoe).
The Blue Devils bring a 1-4 into Wednesday's game compared to 5-0 for the Lions.
"We're looking for continual growth and tremendous effort on the court," Seymore said. "We're a young team with 13 new players added to our roster, so there is a lot of learning and growth with our players. More importantly, we must grow as teammates and have that reflect the way we play."
