BOXSCORE FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The Fredonia State women's basketball team dropped a 77-73 game to Plattsburgh on Saturday. The Devils pulled within two with 20 seconds left, but were unable to take the lead.
The game also continued a weekend trend with more records and milestones.
Down 75-70, freshman
Alexis Cheatham (Lockport) nailed a long three to make it 75-73. The Devils then fouled Plattsburgh's Brittany Marshall, who nailed both free throws to up the lead to four. After a missed three attempt by Cheatham, Marshall was again fouled, but this time missed both free throws. Cheatham got off another desperation three, but did not convert and time ran out.
Milestones were reached by both teams. Fredonia State senior
Jaimie Warren (Lakeview/Frontier) reached the 1,000-point plateau and Plattsburgh's Kathleen Payne became that school's all-time scoring leader.
Warren finished with 26 points, including 10 of 10 from the line, and 15 rebounds -- both game highs. It was her second straight double-double. Sophomore
Sabrina Macaulay (Newark) also earned her second consecutive double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
Cheatham finished with 20 points and seven assists.
Payne finished with 19 points and moved into the No. 1 spot on the Cardinal's all-time list. She now has 1,447 points, passing Alivia LaValley who set the mark in 1993. On Friday, the Devils
Becky Hebert (Hilton) set the new Blue Devil scoring standard. Hebert was a late scratch and did not play vs. Plattsburgh.
The Cardinals were led by a trio of players in double digits. In addition to Payne's 19, Marshall had 19 and Stephanie Linder had 17.
Both teams had 49 rebounds and shot 33 percent from beyond the arc -- the Devils were eight of 24 and Cardinals nine of 27.
The Devils fell to 4-5 in the SUNYAC and 9-6 overall. Plattsburgh improves to 12-4 and 7-2.
The Devils travel to SUNYAC-leading Buffalo State on Tuesday to start the second half of SUNYAC play. The Bengals only conference loss came at the hands of the Devils on Jan. 18.
