BOXSCORE FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State fell Saturday to the Neumann Knights, 4-1, on the second day of their two-game men's hockey series at the Steele Hall Ice Arena.
Four different players scored goals for the Knights, who improved to 7-4-3 while the Blue Devils fell to 2-8-2. Meanwhile, Neumann junior goaltender Ben Curley turned aside 36 of 37 Fredonia State shots to earn his second win in as many days. He authored a 1-0 shutout Friday.
Senior forward
Matt Owczarczak (Buffalo) scored the lone Fredonia State goal, his first of the season, at 7:54 of the second period. Freshman winger
Travis Fernley (Calgary, Alberta) dug out the puck from behind the net to set up the scoring play. Junior winger
Stephen Castriota (Bellport, N.Y.) was also credited with an assist.
Owczarczak's goal cut the Neumann lead to 2-1, yet the Knights weren't finished. Goals by Mike Cauley and Jory Mullin upped the margin to three goals before the teams played a scoreless third period. Mullin's goal came during a five-minute Neumann power play.
Fredonia State had a hard time getting the puck out of its defensive end for much of the first period and the Knights cashed in. Brandon Gagne opened the scoring at 14:38 when he stuffed the puck into the left corner from alongside Blue Devil freshman goaltender
Jeff Flagler (Owen Sound, Ont.). The Knights made it 2-0 less than a minute later on a goal by Kajon McKay.
Flagler made 30 saves. He had 44 saves in the Blue Devils' loss Friday.
The Blue Devils play twice against New Hampshire schools -- Tuesday at New England College, Wednesday at Franklin Pierce -- before returning home next Saturday to face Curry at 3 p.m.
