FREDONIA, N.Y. – Brandon Schick scored two goals and had an assist to lead Fredonia State over Cazenovia, 4-1, in non-conference men's soccer Wednesday night at University Stadium.
The game was halted with 9:26 left after lightning was detected in the area. Following a delay of nearly one hour, the game was declared official.
The goals were the first two as a collegian for Schick, a freshman forward from Cheektowaga. Paul Reinis, a sophomore midfielder from Webster, also scored his first collegiate goal, while junior Connor Meekins from Bemus Point, netted his fourth goal of the season.
The Blue Devils improved to 3-2 while Cazenovia fell to 1-3.
The halftime stats favored Fredonia by wide margins. The Blue Devils had 21 shots, seven on goal, while the Wildcats took two shots. The Blue Devils also had a 8-1 advantage in corner kicks, and were called for six fouls to three fouls against Cazenovia.
Although the Blue Devils kept the ball at their offensive end for most of the first half, they finally cashed in in the 38th minute on a solo effort by Reinis. Taking possession along the near the left sideline, he deked two defenders to get into shooting space. His hard strike from about 30 yards out soared into the upper left corner of the net.
The Blue Devils wasted littled time upping their lead to 2-0 early in the second half on a header by Meekins off a cross by Schick in 47th minute. Schick then added an unassisted goal when he dribbled from the top of the box to elude defenders, and fired a shot just below the cross bar in the 57th minute. He scored his second goal of the game after receiving a long through ball and dribbling around a defender in the 64th minute.
Cazenovia's Joe Celeste ruined the Fredonia State shutout bid when he scored in the 74th minute. He was back in the game after being helped off the field in the first half with a lower body injury.
The final statistics, as they did at halftime, favored Fredonia State: 31-9 in shots and 11-4 in corners.
The Blue Devils are back in action Saturday at Geneva (Pa.). Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
