BOXSCORE 2 CORTLAND, N.Y. –
Jamie Atkins had a two-run double and a two-run homer Friday as Fredonia State defeated Cortland, 5-4, in the second game of a SUNYAC doubleheader.
The homer was the first by Atkins in four seasons and only the third win ever over Cortland, a perennial SUNYAC power. The series dates back to 2000.
Fredonia State dropped a roller-coaster opener, 8-7.
The Blue Devils shook away the emotion of the first game by loading the bases in the first inning of Game 2. They pushed across one run on a sacrifice fly by
Megan Medina.
The Blue Devils were still leading 1-0 when Atkins smashed her two-run double in the top of the third. Her two-run homer came in the fifth and upped the Fredonia State advantage to 5-1.

Alyssa Brognano (3-4) gave up a solo homer in the third, two more runs in the fifth, and an unearned run in the sixth. She pitched around a lead-off single in the seventh as the Blue Devils improved to 5-11 overall, 2-4 in the SUNYAC.
Cortland fell to 8-10 overall, 2-2 in the conference.
The Red Dragons had won the last 18 meetings between the teams dating back to Fredonia State's 5-4 win on April 17, 2004. The Blue Devils also defeated the Red Dragons 2-1 on April 28, 2001.
The Blue Devils nearly broke through in Game 1 of the doubleheader. They jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and led 6-3 heading into the last of the sixth. Cortland rallied for four runs to take a 7-6 lead.
The momentum shifted back to Fredonia State in the top of the seventh on a two-out, RBI single to center by
Alyssa Morgan. It was Morgan's third hit and second RBI of the game.
Cortland scored an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh and saddled
Raela Wiley-Delp (2-4) with the loss in relief.
Danielle Shelp was the Blue Devil starter.
Morgan added three more hits in Game 2 and finished the day 6 for 10.
Katie Bartkowiak and
Anne Wasik had three hits each in the doubleheader.
Fredonia State continues its weekend road trip to central New York with a doubleheader Saturday at Oswego. The first game begins at noon.
